Jo Hind Make Yourself
What is your name and job role / position and company?
Jo Hind, Managing Partner Make Yourself
Could you give us a brief overview of what your role entails and what you love about it and/or your company?
Running training for both groups and one to one on all aspects of communications, presenting, influencing, negotiating etc. I love the variety of working with lots of different companies and seeing the progress that people can make in a short time. Working in a small company gives you the opportunity to be involved in all aspects and decisions.
Could you give us a brief overview of a typical day?
If I’m delivering training it will be running training from 9-5 and preparing and following up at each end of the day. On other days I’m having new business meetings, writing proposals and working on marketing.
What would you say are the key skills required to be effective in your role?
Being a good communicator and having the confidence to walk the talk! Being organised, able to think on your feet and being good with people.
Tell us a little bit about your career progression. Where did you start out and how you developed into your current role?
I worked in media roles all my career (both media owner and agency side) I always enjoyed coaching and mentoring so am loving the opportunity to use my experience in a new way.
What’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to do?
Be a dancer !
What would you say has been your biggest challenge?
Surviving in a very fast moving sales environment.
If you weren’t doing this role, what would you love to be doing?
I’m really happy doing what I’m doing as it’s a relatively new direction for me.
Which brands do you think are getting it right in the digital space?
I think under armour are doing some interesting things, I love Map My Run and My Fitness Pal. Netflix is a winner and I think Snapchat must be doing something right based on the amount of time my son spends on it!
Do you have any recommended books that have had a big influence on your career / business?
Nicholas Bate “Do what you want” and “You only better” David Rock “Your Brain at work”
If you were a superhero who would you be and what would be your superpower?
I would be Timegirl and would have the power to pause time or create more!
What advice would you give those starting out in business now?
To be conscious that the most important asset you have is your people and not to lose sight of that. Create time to think strategically rather than getting caught up in the day to day. Have a work life balance, turn your phone off!
